The men in fraternities seemed to encourage this pettiness, at least at my school, and were hugely racist, misogynist... really any type of bigot you can think of, they seemed to embody those ideals (clearly this isn't true of EVERY member). If you aren't motivated to learn and to do your work without being forced into putting in the effort required of you...well, you haven't really learned to be conscientious, because being conscientious means you do the work without being forced to. It is a HUGE commitment. There's not an opportunity to meet new people or just sit around and talk with someone new. I was looking around me at all these girls who I thought were my friends and realizing that they were embarrassed by me for not being tan. It was very informative. No chapter in my greek life community had rules dictating what we should(n't) wear outside of recruitment or social events (and for these, it was mostly "don't dress so slutty"). I ended up just giving up going to meetings and whatnot because I didn't know anyone's name, and it seemed like everyone was getting together and hanging out except for me. Forced alcohol intake, naked pledges, for some PHA orgs, having to have sex with or be a maid to the "Big Brother" orgs, one organization on our campus hazed only their fat pledges. Plus, figuring out how to run shit and plan parties with no older girls to turn to can be tough. Yeah, you will probably never get hurt and could have a great experience, but why would you willingly opt in to greek life?
